UK Trailer Lighting Law: What You Need to Know

Towing a trailer on UK roads? It’s essential to ensure your lighting setup is fully compliant with The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989. Here’s a breakdown of what the law requires:

Mandatory Lighting (all trailers):

  • Two red sidelights
  • Two red stop lights
  • Two red triangular reflectors
  • Illuminated number plate
  • Amber indicators, flashing at 60–120 times per minute
  • An alert system for the driver (e.g., dashboard light or buzzer) signalling that the indicators are working properly

Additional Requirements by Size and Age:

  • Built after 30 Sept 1990: Must include white front reflectors,
  • Trailers wider than 1.3m: At least one red fog lamp; if only one, fit it either centrally or on the offside
  • Wider than 1.6m: Requires white front position lights or markers
  • Trailers with brakes and built after October 2012: Must have a reverse light
  • Longer than 6m (excluding drawbar): Must include side marker lights (red or white)

Exact Placement Rules:

  • Indicators: 350–1500 mm from ground; max 400 mm from side; at least 400 mm between them
  • Reflective triangles: 250–900 mm from ground; separated by at least 600 mm; no more than 400 mm from sides
  • Fog lamps: 250–1000 mm from ground; separated by at least 400 mm; at least 100 mm away from tail/indicator lights

Braked trailers over 750 kg should have a reverse lamp on the left, or one on each side if over 6 m long.

Why This Matters
