The Motability Scheme enables people to get mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car. The scheme is similar to having a leased vehicle; you have the vehicle to use until the end of your contract, you then hand the vehicle back to the lease company, or in some cases, purchase the vehicle.
There are many Motability car users who want a towbar fitting for either a cycle carrier, trailer or caravan. So, is there a problem getting a tow bar for a Motability car?
The good news is that if you’re a Motability car user, you can have a tow bar fitted.
Before having a tow bar fitted to a Motability vehicle, there are a few important things you need to know.
You need to inform Motability that you intend to have a tow bar fitted. (This is for their vehicle records and insurance purposes.)
(Make sure you get written confirmation from Motability stating fitting a towbar is OK.)
The Motability agent will let you know if they require the tow bar to be removed before you hand the car back or if they will accept the vehicle with the tow bar fitted.
Motability normally insists that the tow bar and electrics are approved for the vehicle and that the fitting company are approved, insured and registered for VAT.
Vehicle-specific, dedicated electrics that are manufacturer-approved must be fitted. (You cannot have a universal or bypass wiring fitted; this will invalidate the vehicle’s warranty and insurance.)
Handing your Motability car back with a tow bar fitted.
If Motability are willing to accept the vehicle with the tow bar installed, it’s just a case of handing the car back to them.
If they want the vehicle back without the tow bar, then you will need to get the tow bar removed. This shouldn’t be a problem, provided you have saved the rear impact beam that the original installer will have handed to you after fitting the tow bar.
Conclusion:
There shouldn’t be any problem having a towbar fitted to a Motability vehicle, provided you contact them and get permission first.
Don’t take chances by either not informing them or by having an unapproved towbar or tow bar fitter. Motability insurance will not have towing included in its standard cover.
